The Distance Between Then and Now [Evelyn]
“What did his face look like?”
She wakes up in a frenzy, reaching out to the ceiling. “Who?” she whispers. The image of longing clouds the dreams of a girl whose black hair trickles down the mattress too large for one body. But she could never remember the name rolling off her tongue throughout the night.
Her chest swells with each glance at the ring nested on the left hand: the ring with no partner.
In the tower she calls home, the girl sneaks out to the room with the television. She sits on the sofa, wrapped in blankets, and waits for the screen to turn on. Love stories gather, cycling through. Music shifts as oft
